Canada is known for vast areas of rugged wilderness. But in the 1000 Islands you will find a much gentler, more pastoral type of natural beauty. At the eastern edge of Lake Ontario, where it spills into the mighty St. Lawrence River, the 1000 Islands region begins. It's directly east from Toronto, about two to three hours' drive, depending on where you stop (and about halfway to Montreal). The historic town of Kingston is the gateway and the largest centre, and the scenic 1000 Islands Parkway runs between Gananoque and Brockville.
