The Rocks is essentially the birthplace of modern Sydney. Over the last 200-odd years, it's transformed to a thriving, modern precinct boasting a range of sleek accommodation, attractions, and funky bars and restaurants. Highlight of the precinct is its cobblestone thoroughfares and alleyways, flanked on both sides with sandstone cottages buildings brimming with history. History buffs step back in time and go for the “The Rocks” self-guided walking tour, or wait outside historic sailors’ base, Cadman's Cottage, every evening at 6pm for the “I'm Free Tour,” and learn stories of the precinct's colourful past. On Fridays the area is crowded for the Rocks Foodies Market and its mouth-watering gourmet fare. The fun continues on Saturdays and Sundays at The Rocks' Weekend Markets, where over 200 stalls sell designer clothing, accessories, home wares, jewellery, photography, and souvenir gifts. The area is a well-known creative and cultural arts hub too, as it is home to the Argyle Gallery, and The Rocks Discovery Museum, and several artisans, poets or bespoke craftsmen.
