Gue in Spiti Valley, around 40 km from the Tabo Monastery, has a mummy, of someone who had surrendered his life while contemplating and is rumoured to be over 500 years old. This mummy was found by the villagers in 1975. Gue is a pretty village with whitewashed houses and is just off the highway; it is so remote that there are wildflowers growing on the road. Recently there has been a big temple constructed in Japanese style for keeping the mummy, earlier the mummy was kept in a glass enclosure.
The mummy seems astoundingly well preserved for its age. Its skin is unbroken and the hair is still on the head. The procedure of preservation of this mummy remains a mystery and no chemicals have been used in its mummification. It is a rare find that was discovered in the early 90s by a traveller. The villagers keep the mummy in high regard and respect it.
