Sea turtles have a gala time as humans stay under lockdown

As we know that the beaches of Florida are now reopening slowly, protests are being made from various sections against this decision. According to reports, the lockdown that various cities faced over the last two months have now resulted in some positive news, both for the environment and wildlife. Marine life is recovering as well, as oceans are now quieter than before, getting the break it deserves. Turtles turned out to be the benefactor of this improved environment, as reported by the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) in Florida.
The LMC monitors Florida’s 9.5 miles of beach, and is an important organisation that supports almost five per cent of the world’s loggerhead sea turtle nests. The centre is closed to the public, even if beaches are open as they continue to work for the betterment of turtles.


The organisation reported that only recently, it found 101 leatherback nests and three loggerhead nests at Juno Beach. This proves that sea turtles are thriving in the absence of human interference. During this summer nesting season, the LMC has marked 76 nests, and have said that there is a significant increase from last year.
This year, with cities under lockdown the chances of these turtles dying are also far less. The members of the LMC informed that turtles have a high risk of getting killed due to fishing gear and, of course, humans visiting the beaches.

News reports have also suggested that Paulista, a town in Brazil has seen more than 300 hatch this year. The town is known for a variety of turtles, namely, green sea turtles, hawksbills, olive ridley turtles, and loggerheads.
