Lakshman Jhula

SIGHTSEEING, RISHIKESH Updated : Jun 28, 2016, 02.35 PM IST

Lakshman JhulaClearly the most iconic figure for Rishikesh, Lakshman Jhula is a suspension bridge built over River Ganga. It sways over the wildly-flowing river at a height of around 65 ft. A major attraction, it sees a huge footfall of tourists all through the day, most enjoying a walk across the slightly swaying bridge. It is built right across the Swarga Ashram and other major attractions in the city, connecting two parts of the city. As per the mythological tales surrounding it, its origin goes back to the days of Ramayana, when it was a mere jute bridge and was crossed by Lakshman. A new metalled bridge was built at the same place in 1939 as the one made of jute deteriorated with time. Over 450 ft long, it is one attraction that you cannot skip in Rishikesh.
