Republic Day experiences in Delhi

On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India came into being, and the rest as they say, is history. Since that day, the largest democracy in the world has been at the global centre of attention, and that rings true now more than ever. The Republic Day parade is looked at by people across the world, and why not, the hard-hitting drums announce the devotion of the country’s many armed forces, as people cheer on with glee. It is the day that announces the unification of a great nation, and how can you possibly not celebrate this momentous day?

Here are four experiences every Delhi-resident must have on Republic Day.

Right on top of our list has to be the coveted Republic Day parade. The once in a lifetime experience is held each year at Rajpath in New Delhi. It is one of the most spectacular events in the world that is televised live. The first-ever parade took place in the year 1950, and ever since it has been an important part of this day. The Republic Day parade also saw a Chief Guest in 2020, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Even though this place is synonymous with the flag hoisting ceremony on Independence Day, it is a great place to visit on Republic Day. It used to be the main residence of Mughal ruler Shah Jahan, Designed by architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the Red Fort is a massive structure that you probably cannot complete in a day’s visit. There are numerous structures within the Red Fort, each with its unique story, and history.

The gardens over 90 acres of land is a green paradise in Delhi. Lodhi Gardens is home to the tombs of Sikandar Lodi and Mohammad Shah. It is situated between Khan Market, and Safdarjung’s Tomb, and is a preferred destination for a quiet walk in the city. On holidays, numerous people visit the sprawling gardens and spend some time amidst nature. There is a bridge, a lake, and other structures here in the gardens.

Every great Delhi outing must end up here in Connaught Place. Its inner and outer circles are home to numerous stores, restaurants, bars, and more. Ask any Delhi-ite, and they will have numerous personal stories and memories related to this place. At any given day, you will find numerous people walking the pavements of Connaught Place looking to enter their favourite places, or just simply hanging out on one of many stone benches.
