One of the few temples dedicated to the Hindu god Brahma, this Pushkar temple was constructed in the 14th century. It contains a beautifully carved silver turtle, which has been installed on a marble floor embedded with silver coins donated by various visitors. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum houses a four-faced idol of Brahma, with his bride, Gayatri.
Pushkar also has numerous temples dedicated to other gods. The Varah temple is dedicated to Vishnu, in the incarnation of a wild boar (varah). The Aptaeshvar temple is an underground Shiva shrine which houses a lingam. Finally, the Savitri temple, dedicated to Brahma’s wife Savitri, is located on a hilltop behind the Brahma temple, and offers beautiful views of the lake.
