Prayagraj airport will soon be made into an international airport

Prayagraj, the erstwhile city of Allahabad, in Uttar Pradesh is getting ready for the Mahakumbh in 2025. The city will host Prayagraj Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025, the largest of all religious congregations in India, attended by millions of Hindu pilgrims from all over the world.
One of the major changes that the city will soon see is the changing of the domestic airport Prayagraj Airport to an international facility. Yes, very soon the city’s only airport will be turned into an international airport.


As per the state government reports, Prayagraj Airport has secured 13th position amongst all domestic airports in India. The satisfactory performance of the airport made it easier to come to the decision to expand the present domestic airport to an international one before the 2025 Mahakumbh.

Celebrated every 12 years, the Mahakumbh Mela is a major Hindu pilgrimage and festival. The festival is said to be one of the largest peaceful gatherings in the world. The festival is observed in four main pilgrimage sites – Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. The last Mahakumbh mela was held in 2013 in Prayagraj and it was also the largest religious gathering in the world, with almost 120 million festival attendees. So big is the festival that it has found itself a place on the UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity!

Prayagraj airport, as an international airport, would mean an easier commute for visitors coming in from places outside India. The festival also sees a lot of foreign visitors, who come to get a first hand experience of the festival.
