A more evocative structure of the prowess of the Teutonic Knights is the magnificent Malbork Castle, about 150 km to the north of Torun. Located alongside River Nogat, a part of the Vistula delta, there is a certain air of romance, mysticism and solemnity around this castle. Considered to be one of the largest brick castles in Europe, it is built on several levels comprising gabled structures, towers, turrets and spires. The castle is a stunning maze of winding corridors, beautiful murals depicting the history of the Teutonic Knights, cobbled stone courtyards, artistic chapels, ancient wells and a plethora of stories of valour, bravery and loyalty.
