The Esplanade or Padang Kota Lama in Bahasa Malay, marks the place in history where the British East India Company first arrived in Penang. It all commenced here along the ocean, when Captain Francis Light, the founder of George Town, landed in Penang in the 18th century. Today, the Esplanade waterfront and its surroundings are a major area for public events such as military parades or celebrations. Stroll on this waterfront street to the sounds of a crashing surf, possible sights of a cruise liner docked somewhere in the distance, the aromas of the spicy local cuisine at the food court, and a feel of the colonial with Fort Cornwallis on one end and a cenotaph on the other. The cenotaph honors soldiers who have died since World War I.
If you stumble upon a board that says ‘German Heritage Trail’ along this beautiful leisurely walk, it just might pique your curiosity about Penang’s German connection. It is said that, at one time, the Germans made for the second largest European trading community after the British. Then during WWII, German U-boats had docked in Penang. In 2012, Penang commemorated this legacy with a heritage trail consisting of a few points and the Esplanade Waterfront carries one such marker.
Tips: Penang is well known for its culinary delights. The Esplanade food court serves a variety of food and drinks. You can try the famous Asam Laksa and top it up with a beer, coffee, or Malaysian Teh Tarik, a drink somewhat similar to an Indian chai. So, save that appetite! Depending on your interest, you may plan your tour to this point of interest.
