Travel around Rome and you won't find many mentions of Napoleon or the French occupation of the city. The emperor had once made a daring grab for it, kidnapped the pope and proclaimed his son King of Rome. But it all came to zilch.

A visit to the Napoleon Museum will get you up to speed on the relationship between the Bonaparte family and Rome. Divided into 13 opulent rooms, there are paintings, sculptures, furniture of the era, including items from the Napoleonic residence of St Cloud, as well as a rich collection of memorabilia that includes snuff boxes, manuscripts, jewels, books and drawings.
