The concerned authorities said that the second observation post towards the eastern side of the fort at Bekal got damaged when the bricks on its outer wall caved in. Soon after this incident, tourists were banned from visiting the observation post of the fort.
Bekal Fort is a huge historical building, the largest in Kerala, built in 1650 by King Shivappa Nayaka. The fort has been used by the film community for shooting movie scenes and music albums like the song Uyire in Mani Ratnam's movie Bombay was shot at the fort.
Kasaragod is famous for many other significant sites such as Chandragiri Fort, Madhur Temple and the famous Ananthapura lake Temple wherein the vegetarian crocodile Babiya lives. The town is also worth visiting for Malom Wildlife Sanctuary, Ranipuram, Nileshwar, Cheruvathur and Parappa Wildlife Sanctuary. Kasaragod is also loved for its beaches and a flourishing handloom industry.
