A collaboration between Beijing’s afterhours dream team—Leon Lee (of Apothecary fame) and Warren Pang (Australian based cocktail king), Janes & Hooch might seem out of place in its surroundings, but it seems to be just the space Beijing was waiting for. Designed and decorated to resemble a New York-style speakeasy paying homage to the American era of prohibition, the inconspicuous entrance is just the beginning. Within, the promoters have gone the whole nine yards—tin ceiling, exposed brick walls, stripped cement flooring, and candle-light—the split-level expanse transports you back to clandestine watering holes in 1920s USA. The soundtrack stays within the blues-jazz confines, and entry closes once it’s packed, so book a table and don’t be tardy.
