Backspace is an unusual name for a bar but it also inevitably leads to the assumption that it might have strong connections with writing and writers, which is actually true. The bar, located on Chartres Street, with a warm exposed stone work and lovely burnished wood interiors, has always been the hangout of writers and literary characters. But perhaps the best tribute is its most prominent cocktail, which is called ‘Death in the Afternoon’ and is a mix of champagne and absinthe. Literature junkies will realize the name is the same as one of Ernest Hemingway’s famous work. There’s a reason for that too— the cocktail was invented by Hemingway himself and hence the tribute.
