Of the many iconic restaurants and dishes in New Orleans, no other place is as popular and crowded as Café du Monde which specialises in that most decadent item, beignets. Established more than 150 years ago, the café is located on Decatur Street directly opposite Jackson Square park. It is un-missable with its trademark white and green vertical stripes and is synonymous with beignets, small square fried dough dusted with powdered sugar and eaten throughout the day including breakfast. It is believed that the dish was brought to Louisiana by the French and it became a smash hit. Though crowded throughout the day, mostly by tourists, and with queues sometimes stretching for more than a block, the Café du Monde experience is a memorable one. And while at it, team the beignets with rich-tasting café au lait.
