Located in the quaint city of Nara, Todai ji is one of the most iconic temples of Japan. Home to the bronze Daibutsu or the Great Buddha, the main hall of this religious landmark is also the largest wooden structure in the world. With two graceful Bodhisattvas, and a multitude of other Buddhist statues, circling the temple is a tryst with spirituality and artistic genius. At the entrance to Todai ji stands the massive Nandaimon Gate with two intimidating and rather grotesque statues. Apart from possessing immense historical significance, the temple is also blessed with copious amounts of natural beauty in the form of the Nara Park. Situated adjacent to the temple complex, the famed deer of Nara dot its gardens and are extremely docile. Here you are encouraged to buy some Senbei rice crackers and feed them. You could also visit the Todaiji Museum located in the vicinity to feast your eyes on splendid religious art.

Nara is one of the most popular day trips from Kyoto, and is a mere 45 minutes away by express trains running along the JR Nara Line. The temple is open every single day from 7:30 to 17:30 (April to September), and from 8:00 to 16:30 (November to February). The hours vary during the months of March and October. The tickets should come for 500 Yen.
