Roerich Art Gallery

Nicolas Roerich (Nikolai Roerich) was a Russian painter, who also wrote poetry and made Naggar his home for the last few years of his life. He travelled extensively through Tibet and the Himalayas. Nicolas Roerich’s old home (ground floor) has now been converted into the Roerich Museum; he lived here from the late 1920s till 1947.

Nicolas Roerich had varied interests and was also known to be a writer, philosopher, archeologist, explorer and mystic. His interest and popularity in Naggar ensures a steady stream of Russian tourists coming in. Following the footsteps of Nicolas Roerich, a lot of writers and painters have also made Naggar their home and a hub for anyone with a creative streak.
The museum here is small but well-maintained; it has paintings made by the artist and philosopher on display. It is a very tranquil place located just above the main market in Naggar. The upper floor of the house is in a fragile state, and hence tourists are not allowed inside. The interiors can be seen through glass panels of closed windows. The most popular paintings in the museum are those with colourful nature landscapes, capturing the grandeur of the mountains.
