When you talk useless things to someone, they usually ask you not to eat their brains. But our fellow people from Meghalaya have literally taken it to their hearts. Doh Khlieh, is a delicious delicacy that comprises of pig brains cooked in curry and eaten with Indian bread. Doh Khlieh is also cooked as a salad with steamed pork, pig brain and onions. Are you up for it brain eater? While most of the delicacies above seem weird, it is definitely worth a nibble on each one of these. If you are staying with a local family, they will even be gracious enough to customise it to suit your taste and not make it so extreme. Our hosts in Mawphlang were from the Khasi tribe, but happily cooked Jadoh for us without blood. They even cooked vegetarian meal for one of our friends. I may have left you jittery by talking about all the extreme food, but that is not all that is eaten in Meghalaya. Potatoes, peas and other fresh organic vegetables are available in abundance. On your next rip to Meghalaya, while you are doing some of these off beat experiences around Shillong, stick to the fresh vegetables if you are a vegetarian. And if you are one of those adventurous non-vegetarians, dig into someone’s brains this time, literally.
