Located in the Parque das Nações (Nations' Park), Lisbon Oceanarium is the largest indoor aquatic park in Europe. Created in 1998 as part of the World Expo, the oceanarium houses more than 15,000 marine animals representing 450 species. The Lisbon Oceanarium building resembles a futuristic oil rig and can be reached by an elevated footbridge. The highlight of the Lisbon Oceanarium is 11,000 sq feet large tank with four acrylic windows which provide the illusion of an open ocean. This Global Ocean is home to 100 species of marine life across the globe including sharks, manta rays, barracudas and sunfish. Four smaller tanks around the large tank are created to simulate the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Antarctic marine habitats. In addition there are 25 thematic aquariums representing unique global marine habitats. Besides usual fish, you can also find sea otters, spider crabs as well as penguins inside the oceanarium. It is fascinating to get up close with the richness of the underwater world. Visiting the Lisbon Oceanarium is like taking a deep-sea diving experience!
