There are several museum and galleries in Lisbon to reward the appetite of art aficionados; however, if there is time for only one then experts recommend a visit to Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, which exhibits the nation’ most treasured collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewellery and other artefacts. Housed inside a former 17th century palace, the displays include 14th-19th century European, Oriental, African and Portuguese artistic samples. The list of highlights is pretty long, paintings such as Panels of St Vincent and Hell and sculptures like the ivory figure of Salt Cellar and limestone made ‘Two Headed Fountain’ are a few to name.
