An interesting part of Lisbon discovery is the tram journey. The city’s old-fashioned tram grid is an integral part of its culture, no less important than what emanates from its historic buildings, monuments, cobbled streets and quaint lifestyle. Beginning operation in 1873, the classic and pre-war, Remodelado trams rattle today along five designated routes. The ones most infected by the tourists are number 15, which shuttles to Belem, and number 28 which lurches and screeches through many narrow and winding streets of the city’s hilly quarters, negotiate incredibly shrill hairpin bends and goes past many of the city’s blockbuster sites like the castle and the cathedral.
