Home to the original ‘Pastéis de Belém’
Noteworthy for: This bakery has been churning out ‘Pastéis de Belém’ since 1837.
After a small revolution, and the closure of many of the convents and monasteries in Portugal, nuns (or so it’s rumoured) began selling the sweets near Jerónimos Monastery, just to make ends meet. You can enjoy the pastéis with sugar and cinnamon while sitting inside the bakery’s café, or have them wrapped up to go. The walls of the bakery are covered with blue and white decorative azulejos tiles, and can only add to your enjoyment of these delicious sweets.
