A Gothic masterpiece in the centre of Vienna
Word to the wise: If you plan on climbing the 343 steps to the lookout in the southern tower (the incredible view is well worth the hike), try not to eat a big meal beforehand. Your stomach will thank you.

St. Stephan's Cathedral stands at the true heart of Vienna, its geographical centre. It’s a breathtaking Gothic monument to the creativity (and finances) of the men who had it built. The Cathedral began life as a Romanesque church, and then a Romanesque basilica. Fire brought the original structures down in 1258, and the Gothic marvel you see today, with its massive southern tower (higher than any other building in Vienna), took their place.
Note the multi-coloured tiles comprising the mosaic on the roof outside. Not easily missed in a city so dominated by grey. Once inside, crane your neck back and admire the lavish interior, or simply enjoy the extensive art collection on display.
