Kuldiga

‘Quaint’ is the word you’re looking for when you visit the city of Kuldiga. Known as ‘Latvian Venice’, rivers flow along the streets and alleyways of many of the town’s houses. This gives Kuldiga a magical feel, and no matter where you walk, there are beautiful cottages and landscape to admire. The streets are cobblestoned and the roofs are thatched, giving the town an old-time feel. Unlike many Latvian cities where invaders destroyed much of the traditional architecture, the buildings of Kuldiga are well preserved. There are also plenty of museums that document the history and culture of the city. The Kuldiga Castle, one of the well-preserved buildings, was built in 1242 by German knights. The old brick bridge is one of the longest of such bridges in all of Europe, a charming spot to explore.

Do not miss to visit the historical centre for views that have been long admired by poets and painters over the centuries. The Venta Waterfall is the widest waterfall in Europe and is associated with different folk tales. Ask some of the locals about its interesting history. The Aleksupite Waterfall is also worth seeing. The Riezupe Sand Caves are an underground maze of caves that attracts numerous visitors. Renting a bicycle or a canoe is a great way to explore the city.
