A classic European flea market
Word to the wise: Forget the souvenir shops in the centre of town – this is the place for authentic Eastern European memorabilia.
Hala Targowa, a 10 minute walk south-east of the Old Town, is open daily selling fresh produce and clothing. But the best time to visit is on Sunday morning when it hosts a huge open-air flea market.
Largely ignoring the professional antiques dealers, locals come here to rummage through the sprawling mass of religious souvenirs, crockery, postcards, clothes, medals, jewellery, books and vinyl – all in various stages of disrepair – in the hope of turning up hidden treasure. For the best chances, arrive soon after dawn when the sellers are just setting out their wares.
