Also known as Alipore Zoological Garden, the Kolkata zoo is a place that is famous for a wide range of flora and fauna. The only zoo in Kolkata, the Alipore Zoo (as it is also known as) was established on 1875 and is locally called Alipur Chiriakhana or Kolkata Chiriakhana. A major tourist attraction in Kolkata during the winter season, Kolkata zoo is home to animals like royal Bengal tiger, African lion, jaguar, hippopotamus, one-horned rhinoceros, reticulated giraffe, Grant's zebra, dromedary camel and elephant. Apart from these, the zoo also preserves an impressive number of attractive and rare species birds. The fact that Alipore Zoological Garden is one of Kolkata’s most visited places is apparent from the staggering numbers of visitor it sees on an annual basis.
