Trekking banned in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh; here’s why

Winter is in its full fury in Himachal Pradesh as of now. With fresh snowfall and more bad weather warnings, if you had any plans to go high-altitude trekking in Kangra district, you need to cancel them now. Recently, Kangra district authorities have banned trekking on routes that are above 3000 metres.

Trekking on low-altitude routes too come with their fair share of restrictions. For any trekking activities on the low-altitude routes of Triund, Kareri and Adi HimChamunda, you will need to obtain mandatory prior permission from Kangra district authorities.



In case there are any bad weather warnings and alerts from India Meteorological Department-Shimla, all permissions obtained earlier for these routes will be cancelled.


The district authorities have also informed that in case of violation of these orders, action will be taken against the person under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 51 to 60 of the Disaster Management Act 2005.



This rule is for all residents and tourists visiting the district. However, disaster management agencies like National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), search and rescue team of the Mountaineering Centre Mcleodganj, and police are exempted from this above mentioned rule.


Owing to the recent snowfall in Manali and Lahaul-Spiti districts, hundreds of vehicles had to be rescued from the South Portal of Atal Tunnel which runs under the Rohtang Pass near Manali. The new rule that has been put in place by the Kangra district authorities will help avoid such emergency situations in the district.
