This hotel in the Arctic generates more energy than it consumes

Yes, there is a hotel in the Arctic Circle that generates more energy than it consumes. A Norweigan architecture firm, Snøhetta, is leading the project. The proposed hotel is built in Svart, and is the first hotel in the world to be labelled as a ‘Powerhouse Hotel’. As a remarkable step towards sustainable hospitality practices, this hotel is consuming 85 per cent less energy as compared to other hotels.

This powerhouse hotel is on the waters of Holandsfjorden fjord, making for a very captivating sight. Snøhetta is focussed on making it a contemporary structure with its roots in traditional architecture of the region. Visitors at the hotel would be ferried via power neutral boats when it opens to the public in 2021. The property is using solar energy for most of its lighting and heating requirements. Further, energy is also sourced via geothermal wells. Needless to mention, it generates more electricity than it consumes.
Another highlight of this hotel in the Arctic Circle is its reliance on natural light; gigantic, transparent windows cover most of the walls here, utilising natural light as well as looking quite stunning. Snøhetta aims to be a trendsetter in building green, sustainable, energy-positive buildings and already boasts of a very impressive portfolio.

Snøhetta’s Founding Partner Kjetil Trædal Thorsen also spoke on the initiative, quipping “Building in such a precious environment comes with some clear obligations in terms of preserving the natural beauty and the fauna and flora of the site.”
