Built from the 15th century onwards, this imposing fort-palace towers above the Delhi-Jaipur highway. It was established as the third capital of the Rajput descendants of Prithviraj Chauhan III in 1464, after his defeat by Muhamad Ghori in Delhi. Since being impeccably restored by the Neemrana group, it is easily one of the most popular weekend getaways from Delhi. Built on a hill, the fort encloses seven palace wings that are spread over 12 layers and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Each of its rooms and suites is tastefully decorated with period furniture, artworks and artefacts. The fort-palace also frequently hosts cultural performances by leading Indian dancers and musicians. There’s plenty to keep guests busy and explore the fort’s long history: camel cart rides, India’s first zip line, vintage cars, a self-guided multimedia tour, a trek to an 18th-century step well nearby, as well as a swimming pool and an Ayurvedic spa.
