The Hellnar Arch

The Snaeffelsness Peninsula in West Iceland is defined by vast stretches of windswept volcanic moors. It is home to a glacier, volcanoes and a number of unique natural rock formations. The Gatklettur Rock Arch near the tiny fishing village of Hellnar is one of them. The arch is surrounded by rugged rock formations and the waves have shaped these volcanic cliffs into intriguing patterns. Here, hundreds of sea hawks and birds can be heard even before they can be seen. As you inch closer to the rocks, it’s easy to see bird droppings everywhere. In fact, the smell of the droppings pervades the air. But don’t let this dissuade you, because these beautiful basalt columns and cliffs are truly unique. You could admire the harbour or take a long walk to the next village. If the smell of the droppings or the cold gets overwhelming, you can grab a cup of coffee or a meal at the tiny café overlooking the rock arch. The charming Fjöruhúsið Café also offers homemade cakes, waffles, and a typical Icelandic fish soup.
