Hajo

At a distance of just 27 km from the Saraighat Bridge which is the northern border of Guwahati, you will find this quiet town situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra. An ancient town that goes back to the days of the Koch Dynasty, Hajo occupies a very special place in the socio–cultural milieu of Assam. An eternal example of communal harmony and peaceful coexistence, Hajo is home to three major religions of the world - Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Shrines dedicated to Hindu deities like Goddess Durga, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu; a monastery for Lord Buddha and mosques for major Muslim saints – are all found in proximity to each other.

The major Hindu temple is Hayagriva Madhava Mandir which is a key tourist attraction in Assam. Apart from Hindus, Buddhists from the state and even neighbouring Bhutan come here to pay their offerings. This temple enshrines an image of Lord Vishnu which is very much similar to the image of Lord Jagannath at Puri (Orissa). Adjacent to this temple is the renowned shrine of the Muslims - Powa Mecca which is notable for the tomb of Pir Giasuddin Auliya.
