Well, the name is self explanatory―it is a bridge. What is in Saraighat Bridge that calls for tourist attention? The answer leads us back in time to 1671 when the Mughals sent a huge army to invade the then undivided Assam. The Ahoms were the ruling dynasty at that time and they drove off the Mughals under the leadership of their valiant army commander Lachit Borphukan in an epic battle fought on the waters of the Brahmaputra. And as it happened, the bridge stands over the same area where the battle took place!The first rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra, Saraighat Bridge was opened to public in 1962 and since then it has been a signature for the city of Guwahati. For the numbers, at 1,492 meters in length, Saraighat finds place among the longest river bridges in India.
