Youth-driven city art space
Located in an area of the city that the council has dubbed the 'cultural quarter', the Transmission Gallery has helped to play a large part in the area's new found status. Created with the intention of providing a platform for young artists in the city, the free gallery has been under the helm of a voluntary committee of six people, most of whom are recent art school graduates, since its 1983 inception. Each committee member is given a maximum two year tenure, allowing them a limited chance to put their mark on the gallery and its output.
The ever-evolving director's board theoretically means that opportunities are equal, new ideas are constantly brought in and installations are kept fresh, but in truth, Transmission often tends to be a little cliquey, regurgitating similar shows year after year as favour is given to previous committee members and their friends.
