Winter is the best time to view both the northern lights and the northern sky in and around the city of Edmonton. It is in fact one of the best cities to view these surreal green and purple lights that put on one of the best natural shows. Don’t be fooled though, you will need to cover yourself well as temperatures drop below zero in this part of the world. It is recommended that you bring a thermos full of hot chocolate or coffee, lots of hats and mitts, and settle in for a long night. Unfortunately, the aurora borealis isn’t always showing its colours, so visitors to Edmonton should check out the internet beforehand, as it will tell you the best viewing nights. Elk Island is always a popular spot outside the city to view the lights, where city lights are dimmed and skies are darker. If you want to venture a little farther outside the city, then head to Athabasca, an area known for its spectacular shows. Remember to put on warm clothing and to check the weather forecasts ahead of time.
