Taking its name from the street it’s located on, Stone Nullah Tavern in Wanchai is the newest offering by makers of Italian favourites Posto Pubblico, Linguini Fini and Pizzeria Pubblico, although this recent addition offers Hong Kong locals a taste of New American cuisine amidst a casual and unpretentious setting. The minute you step through the massive sliding glass doors of the restaurant, you’ll feel instantly comfortable—it’s like the neighbourhood haunt that never gets old. The food is much the same—comfort food staples have been given a much-needed makeover without taking away from their authenticity. The menu does away with the starter-mains segregation, and everything is served tapas style. Stars include the pork sausage served with pickled apples and mustard, crispy pig’s head, mac and cheese (topped with an egg yolk), and the ultimate decadence—the fat kid cake, which comprises of four layers (red velvet, cheesecake, chocolate mousse and crème brulée) and will lull you into a food coma by the time you’re through with it. The items on the menu are tweaked by the chef in accordance with seasonal produce, and everything is best eaten with a tall mug of beer.
