Whether or not you are a foodie, a visit to these 5 cabin restaurants in Kolkata is an experience in itself. For those who don't know, cabins are private eating areas within the restaurant that are usually segregated by a wooden panel or curtain. Once highly patronized by the traditional Bengali culture, the cabin restaurant culture is already under threat from modern day cafes and restaurants. The erstwhile tradition might have died, but a few of these restaurants are still there. Perfect for long adda sessions, these restaurants continue to cater to their loyal customers while struggling hard to retain their identity. Some are still popular hang-outs for college goers. Dilkusha Cabin has been serving Kolkatans for more than a century now and its doi chicken is a must have. Fish kabiraji at Basanta Cabin, chicken stew at AD Cabin and chicken kosha at Anadi Cabin are equally delectable. If you want to try some time-tested dishes, opt for the delicious moghlai parantha at Bonophool. Do remember to visit these cabin restaurants before they close down; though a word of caution, do not expect much as these are not anything like the present-day stylish restaurants.
Dilkusha Cabin offers the neighbourhood of MG Road a quaint and comforting food escape. It is the oldest private area restaurants in Kolkata. The doi chicken is served well, and so is kabiraji and cutlet. So stop by for lunch, dinner, or even brunch — and scoop up an order of their ultimate snacks and main course for good measure. This centenarian, heritage and all-embracing restaurant is an ideal spot for a good meal served piping hot.
Time stands still at the Anadi Cabin, an old eating joint situated in Dharmatala locality of Kolkata which still makes several minds nostalgic. With its no-frills décor and a fairly good fare, Anadi Cabin continues to occupy its niche in the restaurant business. Run by the third generation of its founder, patrons seek this place to relish its egg-butter moghlai parantha, mutton kosha, chicken kosha and other fool-proof Bengali jolkhabar eats. The Moghlai Paratha, for your information, has nothing to do with the Mughals; but was invented because the locals loved feeding on deep fried food. Choose this spot for a pocket-friendly meal after a shopping haul at the Esplanade.
Another old establishment, still holding on to its ground, despite being surrounded by the new crop of eateries, is AD Cabin. Established several decades back on Sukea Street or Mahendra Srimani Street, AD Cabin is continuing its next inning due to its customers that are few but faithful. Visitors swear by the conventional Bengali jolkhabar such as vegetarian and non-vegetarian chop, kabiraji, fish fry, cutlets, mangsher stew and the likes. If you overlook the matured walls and décor of the restaurant, you will surely find delight in eating veggie stew with carrots, raw papaya and potato. Of course, the price of every dish is very reasonable.
Stop by at Basanta Cabin for the food of your dreams. Here, moghlai parantha is plenty, so are other dishes. At Basanta Cabin, it can be easy to forget that the modern Kolkata, not the old world City of Joy, await you back outside. Big, bright, and modish eateries stand close to this old cabin resto; but Basanta Cabin, despite losing its former lustre, is as much a family-friendly spot even now as it was decades ago. Nevertheless, good food is delicious at any age. We recommend stopping by for specials alone, and of course, for absorbing the experience of eating at a cabin-style eatery.
