Appa’s canteen as it is popularly referred to, was started in 1942 by a man named Ramchandra Bhatt who acquired the endearing name of appa over the years. The place itself is rather nondescript, though it’s right next to the Deccan Gymkhana club, so keep that as your landmark. With a limited menu and daily specials, it serves South Indian fare, but not the usual idli-dosa you’re accustomed to. The most famous dish here, which hasn’t changed a bit in all these years, is the Khichadi Kakdi or khichadi with cucumber.
