Roland’s Column

SIGHTSEEING, DUBROVNIK Updated : Feb 8, 2017, 04.17 PM IST

Rolands's columnRoland’s column, which is also often referred to as Orlando’s column, is a stone column on the eastern end of the old city, right in front of Saint Blaise Church. The column is carved in shape of a knight and holds a small platform from where public announcements were once made to the citizens who gathered in the square.

The knight carved in the column is supposed to be Orlando, or Roland. Legend has it that Roland was a brave warrior who died protecting his emperor’s army during an ambush. From then on, ‘Roland’ became synonymous with freedom and similar statues were erected in different parts of Europe, Dubrovnik bearing no exception. It’s also believed that the statue’s arm was used for measuring length in medieval times. From being used as pillory during punishments and a platform during public announcements, this statue saw it all.

It stands out the moment you get on Stradun Street and is great to stop by for some history lessons and legends surrounding this brave knight.
