Onofrio’s Fountain

SIGHTSEEING, DUBROVNIK Updated : Feb 8, 2017, 03.59 PM IST

Onofrio’s FountainThe best part about Dubrovnik is that all the sites you visit will have a unique story to tell—a story rooted deeply in history of this enchanting city. Onofrio’s fountains are no different. In the year 1438, in order to celebrate the completion of a new water system in Dubrovnik, architect Onofrio della Cava built two fountains in the old town of Dubrovnik. The big one, which sits right by Pile Gate on the western entrance of the city, is a symbol of achievement and technical feat for Dubrovnik and its residents. Each of the 16 sides of this giant structure has a unique mask with a faucet and gurgles out clean water till date. It’s a popular meeting spot for the youth of the city and a landmark for all tourists exploring the walled city.

The smaller of the two fountains sits on the eastern end of the city and was built to supply water to the market on Luza square. Both the fountains are intricately designed and sculpted, and carry with them a lot of stories from Dubrovnik’s past.
