Cathedral of the Assumption

Located on Kaptol Hill, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is considered the tallest building not only in Zagreb but also in entire Croatia. The stunning facade with twin spires dominates the skyline of the capital. Constructed during the 13th century, this Zagreb Cathedral went through several renovations; the current facade is a result of the final reconstruction after the destruction of the church in 1880 earthquake. Formerly known as St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the new church is the result of extensive renovations undertaken by Hermann Bollé. Take a tour around the cathedral and marvel the striking neo-gothic facade and its various elements. The interiors are worth visiting for exquisite baroque marble altars, the tomb of Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac and the series of 13th-century frescoes, which cover the interior of the nave. If you have time, visit the church in the evening when it is brightly lit up, giving it a warm glow.
