It is expected that this move will help boost city’s local economy. The issue of overcrowding stems from the fact that cruise ship holidaymakers and day-trippers, who land in the city for less than 24 hours, don’t tend to spend money on restaurants and hotels, which eventually does not contribute to tourism industry at all.
Therefore, the new entry fee will especially target these day trippers and cruise ship holidaymakers. From now on, a visitor will have to pay a minimum fee of 2.50 euros (INR 200), which is expected to rise between 5 to 10 euros during the peak months. And this new development is expected to generate 50 million euros a year as compared to 30 million euros that Venice currently makes from tourist taxes.
