World’s 6 most useless landmarks (but we love them anyway!)
Travellers love chasing famous landmarks—whether it’s the Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, or the Taj Mahal. But what about the ones that make you go, “Wait… why is this even here?” Some landmarks serve no real purpose, but that doesn’t stop us from admiring them (or taking selfies with them). Here are six of the world’s most delightfully useless landmarks that we can’t help but love!
Little Mermaid Statue – Denmark
Denmark’s biggest attraction is actually quite small! Sitting on a rock in Copenhagen’s harbor, the Little Mermaid statue stands just 4 feet tall—often surprising tourists with her tiny size. Yet, she remains the country’s most photographed local!
Big Banana – Australia
If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing a giant piece of fruit, Coffs Harbour in Australia has you covered. The Big Banana, a massive banana-shaped structure, was originally built in 1964 to attract visitors to a fruit stall. It worked so well that it became an official landmark. There’s now an entire amusement park around it—because nothing says fun like an oversized banana.
Fremont Troll – USA
Under a bridge in Seattle lurks a giant cement troll clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle. No, it’s not guarding treasure—just waiting to be Instagrammed. Built in the 1990s to “beautify” the underpass, the Fremont Troll doesn’t serve any function… except looking like it’s about to eat your car.
Hand of the Desert – Chile
Imagine driving through Chile’s vast Atacama Desert and suddenly spotting a giant hand sticking out of the sand. This bizarre 36-foot sculpture, known as La Mano del Desierto, is said to represent human suffering. Or maybe it’s just a giant trying to escape. Either way, it’s the middle-of-nowhere selfie stop you never knew you needed.
Crooked House – Poland
This wavy, distorted-looking building in Sopot, Poland, looks like something straight out of a cartoon. The Krzywy Domek (Crooked House) is an architectural wonder that serves no purpose other than making passersby wonder if they’re hallucinating. Inside? Just a regular shopping center.
Giant Fork – Switzerland
If you’ve ever wanted to admire a 26-foot stainless steel fork stuck in a lake, head to Vevey, Switzerland. This enormous fork is planted in Lake Geneva as part of a food museum exhibit. Why? No one really knows. But it’s a great conversation starter for dinner parties.
