History
The construction of Gol Gumbaz was commissioned by Mohammed Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur. It was built as a final resting place for the king and his family members. Construction began in 1626 and was completed in 1656 and today, Gol Gumbaz is a symbol of Bijapur's rich cultural legacy.The second largest dome in the world
Gol Gumbaz is noted for its striking architectural features, the most prominent of which is its massive dome—the second-largest in the world after the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Rising to a height of 44 meters and spanning a diameter of 44 meters, the dome is an engineering marvel.The inside of the Gol Gumbaz is done in intricate arches, balconies, and ornamental features, showcasing the Indo-Islamic architectural style prevalent during the Adil Shahi era. The four towering minarets at each corner of the structure add to its majestic appearance, while the central chamber houses the tombs of Mohammed Adil Shah, his wives, and other members of the royal family.
