In search of the rare and unique in Assam’s Nameri National Park

Our search for all things unique and rare brought us to Nameri National Park in Assam. Nameri National Park is a national park and reserved forest located in Sonitpur district, Assam. The national park is situated in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas and is a part of the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot.
Nameri National Park is known for its rich biodiversity. It is one of the very few places in North East India where you can find Bengal tigers, along with other large mammals such as elephants, leopards, clouded leopards, and gaurs. The park is also home to around 300 species of birds. The star, however, is critically endangered and extremely rare and difficult to spot white-winged wood duck.


The white-winged duck is a critically endangered species and one of the rarest ducks in the world. They are generally difficult to find and observe in the wild, even in areas where they are known to occur. To spot them in the wild, you need to have a lot of patience and luck! These ducks are known to be highly secretive and they prefer to stay hidden in dense vegetation.
