This alkaline lake is shrouded in mystery and is known for its weird appearance and geological history.
Here, more about this mysterious lake.
Scarlet red water
The lake is known as the Deadly Red Lake because of its magnificent crimson-red looks, which definitely looks off and eerie. The shade is due to a high concentration of minerals, mostly sodium carbonate, which seep into the lake from surrounding volcanic soils. The lake's water is also alkaline, with a pH level exceeding 10.5, which is extreme and does not support any kind of aquatic life, earning Natron its ominous reputation.
Mystery behind stone-turned animals
Ol Doinyo Lengai or the Mountain of God is behind the lake's extreme conditions. It is the only active volcano to emit natrocarbonatite, which is an extremely rare carbonatite lava.
Sodium carbonate, along with other minerals, enter the lake from the hills in the region making the water alkaline. Many must not be aware of the fact that the deposits of sodium carbonate were used in the process of Egyptian mummification too.
It is believed that the same process applies for animals that lost their lives in its waters, and got mummified. However, there's no solid proof.
Inhospitable environ, but not for flamingoes!
The flamingos have adapted to the challenges presented by Lake Natron, developing specialized salt glands that help them excrete excess salt absorbed from their diet.
