Does Lake Natron really turn animals into stone? Mystery of world’s scariest lake!

Lake Natron is not your regular pretty lake. This water body, defying conventional expectations, is set in Tanzania, East Africa. Scarlet red water

The lake is known as the Deadly Red Lake because of its magnificent crimson-red looks, which definitely looks off and eerie. The shade is due to a high concentration of minerals, mostly sodium carbonate, which seep into the lake from surrounding volcanic soils.
The lake's water is also alkaline, with a pH level exceeding 10.5, which is extreme and does not support any kind of aquatic life, earning Natron its ominous reputation.

Mystery behind stone-turned animals

There were reports that the lake turns animals that go or touch it into ‘stone’ or ‘mummy’. Well, sounds like a story from a horror movie right? But that’s true as there’s science and geography involved behind this theory because the water’s salt content is extremely high.

Ol Doinyo Lengai or the Mountain of God is behind the lake's extreme conditions. It is the only active volcano to emit natrocarbonatite, which is an extremely rare carbonatite lava.

Sodium carbonate, along with other minerals, enter the lake from the hills in the region making the water alkaline. Many must not be aware of the fact that the deposits of sodium carbonate were used in the process of Egyptian mummification too.

It is believed that the same process applies for animals that lost their lives in its waters, and got mummified. However, there's no solid proof.

Inhospitable environ, but not for flamingoes!

Lake Natron's harsh chemical composition makes for an inhospitable environment. But still, the lake supports a unique ecosystem of extremophiles—organisms that survive in extreme conditions. One of the most famous inhabitants is the lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor). These remarkable birds feed on the lake's alkaline-tolerant blue-green algae and cyanobacteria, which flourish in the extreme pH conditions.

The flamingos have adapted to the challenges presented by Lake Natron, developing specialized salt glands that help them excrete excess salt absorbed from their diet.
