A lesser known destination of Russia, Vladimir is a place full of beautiful churches, and cathedrals, perhaps some of the oldest in the country. Two of these Russian Orthodox Cathedrals, St Demetrius’ Cathedral and the Dormition Cathedral, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Vladimir is widely regarded as one the most important of the ancient cities of Russia, some even calling it the Father of the Russian cities. The city was founded by Vladimit Monomakh, who had built a fortress here in the city, so all of that history is still intact for visitors to soak in. The city went under Mongol invasion in the 13th century, and lost much of its magnificence. However, today it is a modern city with loads of urban attractions, while being dipped in old-world-charm as well. The city is part of the Golden Ring of Russia tour.
