Vatican treasure out after 300 years!

The treasure mentioned here is the Holy Staircase that has remained under wraps for 300 years now, under the watchful eye of the Vatican. The initiated would know that the 28-step staircase is believed to be the same as the one that Jesus Christ climbed up towards his crucifixion. It is also believed that the 28 marble steps were once stained with his blood, and is thus considered as one of the holiest objects of reverence by the Christian community. The staircase is also known by the name of Scala Sancta.

It has now been 300 years that the staircase has evaded the public eye, treasured in the sanctums of the Vatican. Reportedly, there was a need for restoration that has been going on for a year now; the staircase will be made accessible to the public till June 9, 2019. This is the first time in the past 300 years that visitors can actually get closer to and, perhaps, even touch and climb the staircase before it gets covered with wooden planks. Restoration efforts will go on in full swing for two months before it was opened to the visitors; once done, the marble steps would go under heavy wooden planks that are designed to protect it.
The move has made quite a stir, for the Scala Sancta went under a wooden cover in 1753 at the behest of Pope Innocent XIII. Reportedly, it was visited by a huge number of believers every day, and was reeling under the pressure of excessive footfall.
Now, when the Scala Sancta has been made accessible to visitors, there is a chance to admire more, including the frescoes and other wonders at the Vatican. Visitors can also tour the room at the top of the staircase; it is believed to be housing some 5th-century relics and other items related to Jesus Christ. The said room was once the private chapel for the Vatican popes, and is known by the name of Holy of Holies.
