Strategically situated between Delhi and the Deccan, the Malwa kingdom surrounding Indore was a fiercely contested region of India. This region has been ruled by several kingdoms and dynasties, from Ujjain, Mandu, Maheshwar and eventually Indore. While Indore today is largely an industrial, educational and business hub of Madhya Pradesh, the Malwa sultans, the Mughals and the Marathas left their mark on the region with magnificent monuments like forts and temples that are worth visiting on day trips or even for a night out of Indore.
