Umananda Temple

Primarily a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, Umananda Temple is located on the Peacock Island, surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra. Often referred to as the smallest river island on earth, Peacock Island is well connected to the city and regular ferry service is available from the Kachari Ghat of Guwahati. The hill on which the shrine is located is known as Bhasmacala, a direct connect to the legend of Lord Shiva burning Kamadeva into ashes for interrupting his meditation. Assam’s king in the 17th century, Gadadhar Singh established this shrine in 1694 and it has been a major pilgrimage since then.
As mentioned above, visitors need to take a ferry ride to reach the island and this happens to be the highlight of this place. For a meager amount as fare, travelers get to sail through the strong waves of the Brahmaputra and the ride is a memorable affair! And yes, there will be a repetition of the same when you head back to your hotel!
