Uluwatu Temple

Standing at the edge of the cliff and looking at the vast Indian Ocean below from a height of 70 metres, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of my favourite temples in Bali. Ulu means tip and watu refers to rock. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Rudra, Balinese believe in the trinity—Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva—as one form. It is believed to be over 1000 years old. Watch a spectacular sunset and the Kecak or fire dance in the open auditorium, based on the Ramayana. The temple is set inside a forest and is filled with monkeys, believed to be guarding the temple. However, they can be a little boisterous and it is advisable to be cautious.
